As the hunt for an upstate cabin continues, I keep a running list of essential details that will make our cabin feel special. While all white is my go-to interior finish, the idea of exposed wood beams seems like the perfect detail to make you feel like you are in the country. I’ve gathered my three favorite exposed wood beam options:

1-Paint the ceiling white but keep the beams in a natural wood finish. Either cap the beams with old wood or stain them dark for a high contrast finish.

2-Paint the ceiling and the wood beams white. This option works best when the beams intersect the room or when the beams are further away from the ceiling. Painting the beams white makes the room feel larger and creates an architectural detail in the space.

3-Keep the entire ceiling natural wood. This works best with very high ceilings and light flooring. If you have wood floors, an all wood ceiling will dwarf the room. Choose one wood surface for balance.
