15 Jan CABIN FEVER: PENDANT LIGHTING FOR STAIRWELL
Our cabin renovations are coming along slowly, but at a steady pace. We need pendant lights for a few spaces in the house, so I have shopped for more pendant lights than I care to discuss. Scrolling endlessly through thousands of pages and dozens of websites looking for the perfect fit. Dermot loves to be involved in the design process, but he won’t take as much time as I do to find the right light fixture. So I usually gather my favorites, and present them to him, as if he were a client, haha.
The stairs to our lower level are just off the kitchen, across from the kitchen island. We have decided to change out the solid wood door for a glass paneled door to allow more light into the stairs and to make the kitchen feel more open. The door to the stairs is also right next to the bedroom door, so this give us an opportunity to break up the corner of doors in the kitchen.
The ceilings are high in the stairwell, so I thought this would be an ideal space to put a dramatic pendant light. See the space in the photo to the left. A pendant light would also help bring more light closer to the stairs, as the flush mount doesn’t provide enough light. We are keeping the original cedar ceiling in the stairwell, it gives the space depth and a bit of warmth. This opened up the lighting possibilities pretty wide, see my favorites below…
WICKER
To echo the warm feeling of the cedar ceiling, I thought adding a textural wicker shade would create pretty shadows in the stairwell. After reviewing with Dermot we decided it might not be the best lighting for a stairwell, as it has to be functional more than decorative. Jute Seychelle Cylinder Pendant | Natural Bamboo Light.
LANTERN
I like the idea of a long lantern in this space, softening the hard, angular lines of the narrow hallway. You can never go wrong with an Akari by Noguchi Lantern, but I also love the black and white contrast and abnormal shape of the &Tradition Formakami JH3 Pendant.
CAGE
To mimic the linear lines of the cedar ceiling, I thought the cage pendants would add some more visual interest, while filling the narrow space and giving great shadows on the walls. The black cage Sienna Pendant offers a great contrast against white walls while the White Slopes Suspension light has an organic egg-like form that I gravitate towards.
FABRIC COVERED
The idea of a soft filtered light coming through the fabric creates a beautiful ambiance, but might not provide enough lighting for the stairwell. Dunne Aged Iron Pendant | Ay Illuminate Sisel Pendant
TEXTURE
Adding a new natural texture to the space would add interest to the hall, while keeping things relatively neutral. The cutouts of the Appari White Rough Cast Pendant mimic that of a beehive while the rough texture of the MushLume Hemi Pendant by Danielle Trofe mimics a heavy canvas, but in actuality is a grown from mushrooms! A great sustainable and eco-friendly option.
