My July design inspiration is fueled by the lines and curves of organic shapes. Shapes that might be found in nature, the way a leaf curls as it dries up, the curve of a woman’s back when she undresses. The organic forms also speak to my design process: I rarely sketch my own designs, I often sit with my dress form and manipulate the muslin until it takes on a form that pleases me. A very organic process, rarely premeditated. My love of natural fibers is an extension of this organic process, as I choose to work almost exclusively in cotton, linen, silk and wool. The exception to this rule is when I work with reclaimed and vintage fabrics, which is a way to reduce waste. Stay tuned for the final Project de. look…

My Project de. July design was all about the fabric. I discovered this piece of raw linen while traveling a few weeks ago. I wanted to design something that highlighted the original selvedges adorned with blue stripes and orange stamps. The fabric felt very utilitarian, so I wanted to keep the silhouette relatively simple. With pleating details, open sides and contrast orange chain stitch around the raw edges, this style will wear well with age. It paired perfectly with my DIY Prada skinny silk scarf and my silk wide leg pants from Piamita.
